Falmouth har i alla tider varit avstampen för Atlantseglingar. Härifrån påbörjade berömdheter som Francis Chichester och Alec Rose sina ensamseglingar jorden runt. Motorgång i stitje till Dartmouth, en idyllisk stad en bit upp i floden Dart där husen klättrar uppför kullarna. Dartmouth är en turiststad med både hjulångare och ånglok. Vi förtöjer vid en pontonbrygga utan landförbindelse. Vill man iland är det jollen eller vattentaxi som gäller. Floden är full av båtar som är förtöjda i bojar.

Fortsatt stiltje och motorgång och dessutom dis när vi fortsätter mot Solent. Gör tidvattensberäkningar och studerar strömkartor. Passerar Portland Bill med 2 knops medström, håller långt ut för att undvika strömvirvlarna. Engelska flottan har skjutövningar på havet, kanondundret hörs lång väg. Under natten driver vi sakta med strömmen för att anlända lagom i gryningen till de vackra kalkklipporna The Needles vid inloppet till Solent.

Hela Solent är engelsmännens seglarmecka. Som Marstrand och Sandhamn ihopslaget och sedan fördubblat och mer därtill. Vi väljer att gå upp i den idylliska floden Beaulieu på fastlandssidan strax före Southampton. Hittar det trånga inloppet och tar oss försiktigt in på högvatten över den grunda banken med strömmen i sidan. Floden slingrar sig fram mellan ängar och ekskogar. Gäss, svanar och änder söker föda på de översvämmade strandängarna. Efter 3 nm når vi Bucklers Hard och förtöjer vid en av pontonbryggorna.

Detta är historisk mark. Här byggdes fartyg åt amiral Nelson, bland annat flera av de fartyg som deltog i slaget vid Trafalgar. Ekskogarna häromkring var viktiga för varvsverksamheten då varje fartygsbygge krävde virke från 2.000 ekar. Ett intressant museum beskriver fartygsbygge i detalj.

En cykeltur tar oss till den lilla staden Beaulieu uppströms floden. Franska munkar byggde ett kloster här på 1200-talet. Därav stadens och flodens namn "vacker plats". Vid reformationen på 1500-talet revs stora delar av klostret inklusive den stora kyrkan. Den nya ägaren Lord Montagu byggde ett vackert slott av stenen från klostret. Släkten Montagu bor fortfarande på slottet och har skapat ett nöjesfält i parken och ett välkänt bilmuseum "National Motor Museum" med hundratals bilar och motorcyklar från bilismens barndom fram till våra dagar.

Cowes på Isle of Wight blir vår nästa anhalt efter att ha kämpat oss fram i 3 knops motström. Även här går vi upp en bit i floden mellan färjor och marinor och förtöjer i East Cowes Marina. Staden förbereder sig för Cowes Week, en hel vecka med kappseglingar. Även här tas cyklarna fram för en tur utmed floden Medina till Newport som är en typisk engelsk stad med låga hus och trånga gator.

Drottning Victoria ville fly London med man och nio barn och lät bygga Osborne House 1850 utanför Cowes. Idag är slottet ett museum och man kan beundra dåtidens prakt och överdåd. Slottet var det första huset i England, kanske hela världen, med centralvärme, rinnande kallt och varmt vatten, vattentoaletter och senare också elektricitet. Genom ingifte av sina barn i de flesta kungahusen i Europa, är drottning Victoria anmoder även till den svenska genom barnbarnbarn.... drottning Louise.

Seglingen fortsätter till Dover och dess kritklippor. Här måste man få tillstånd innan man går in mellan de höga vågbrytarna, eftersom färjetrafiken till Calais är mycket livlig. Vi anländer vid lågvatten och anropar hamnen och förtöjer i tidvattenbassängen utanför slussportarna till de inre bassängerna. Efter några timmar har tidvattnet lyft oss 5 meter.

Falmouth has always been the departure port for Atlantic crossings. Celebrities as Francis Chichester and Alec Rose started their single handed circumnavigations from here. Motoring in calms to Dartmouth, an idyllic town up in river Dart where the houses climb up on the hillsides. Dartmouth is a very touristic town with both steam boat and steam railway. We more along a pontoon without land connection. If you want to go ashore you need a dinghy or a water taxi. The river is crowded with yachts at mooring buoys.

More calms and motoring and also haze when continuing to Solent. Tide calculations are made and tide Atlases are studied. Passing Portland Bill with 2 knots of following current, keeping far out to avoid eddies. The English Navy has shooting exercises, the noise is heard from far. During the night we are drifting slowly to arrive just at surise to the beautiful white chalk cliffs at The Needles at the entrance to Solent.

Solent is the Mecca of sailing in England. We choose to go up in the Beaulieu river on the mainland just before Southampton. We find the narrow entrance and proceed gently over the bar at high tide with the current on the beam. The river is meandering between meadows and oak forests. Gees, swans and ducks are searching for food on the flooded meadows. After 3 nm we arrtive at Bucklers Hard and moor at one of the pontoons.

This is a historical place. Ships were built here for Admiral Nelson, among others several ships participating in the battle at Trafalgar. The oak forests here were important for the ship yards, as every ship needed timber from 2,000 oaks. An interesting museum describes ship building in detail.

A bicycle tour takes us upriver to the small town Beaulieu. Here French monks built an abbey in the 13^th century. That is the reason of the name of the town and the river "beautiful place". In the 16^th centuary, when the Catholic church was banned, most of the abbey was demolished including the large church. The new owner, Lord Montagu, built a beautiful palace of the stone from the abbey. The Montagus still live in the palace and have created a big amusement park in their garden and a famous car museum " National Motor Museum" with hundreds of cars and motorcycles on display from the start of motoring to our days.

Cowes on Isle of Wight is our next stop after negociating a 3 knots foul tide. Also here we go upriver between ferries and marinas and moore in East Cowes Marina. The town is preparing for Cowes Week, a whole week of racing. Once more our bicycles take us for a tour along the Medina River to Newport, a typical English town with low houses and narrow streets.

Queen Victoria wanted to leave London during somertime with husband and nine children. She had Osbone House built outside Cowes in 1850. Today the palace is a museum and you can admire the splendour and extravagansa of the time. The palace was the first house in England, maybe in the whole world, to have central heating, warm and cold water, water toilets and later also electricity. Through marrying her children into most of the European monarchies, Queen Victoria also is the "mother" of the Swedish royal family through her grand, grand grand....

The sailing continues to Dover and its white cliffs. Here we need permission to enter between the high breakwaters as there is intensive ferry traffic to Calais. We arrive at low water and call the harbourmaster and moor in the tidal bassin outside the gates to the inner bassins. After some hours the tide has lifted us 5 meters.
